DANCING FEET AND TALKING DRUMs

This program is designed for students from the kindergarten through the university level. It combines cultural education, performance art, and hands-on participation to introduce students to West African culture. It emphasizes the importance of music, dance, and community in the lives of Africans and the many ways that students can apply what they learn to their own lives. Students will learn basic African rhythms and corresponding dance movements through an interactive approach that allows them to play, dance, and experience the power of rhythm personally. The program culminates in a performance by professional musicians and dancers with authentic instruments and traditional attire.

TRACING THE ORIGINS: AFRICAN AND DIASPORA MUSIC AND DANCE

Okaidja takes his audiences on a journey to revisit the African Diaspora through traditional music, dance, and folklore. The spirited performance preserves cultural and historical traditions and promotes cross-cultural understanding by examining the influence of West African culture on the Americas. Okaidja shows the connection between West Africa and the rest of the world by exploring the roots of African Diaspora music and dance. Tracing the Origins illustrates how music and dance survived the Middle Passage and eventually thrived in the lands where the slave ships landed.

SHOKOTO MUSIC AND DANCE PROJECT

Shokoto plays an energetic, danceable, family friendly mixture of traditional and contemporary African and world music. Shokoto creates innovative music, drawing upon their West African roots and the diverse music of the African Diaspora. The result is a dynamic fusion of music and dance from Ghana, Brazil, Cuba, Peru, and the Deep South. Shokoto preserves rhythms that are disappearing due to the fast pace modernization in Ghana by combining Ga and Dagomba music. The infectious beats, soulful vocals and amazing African dancing will get the crowd up and shaking it.
